Fools!

(A Lament for the Hoodwinked)

They promised change, they spun their tales,
With gilded words and grand travails.
Inflation? Nay! Just fear they spread—
Now groceries drain your purse instead.

The stocks would soar, the jobs would grow,
Yet layoffs hit, the markets slow.
Your paycheck shrinks, the rent climbs high,
But still you trust—Oh my, oh my!

Abroad, the world once held in check,
Now scoffs, now laughs, and lost respect.
For leaders weak and minds so thin,
Have left the wolves to wander in.

Gas once flowed, so cheap, so fair,
Now empty tanks and blank despair.
They told you oil was old and crude—
Yet now you walk, your car subdued.

You called them wise, you called them just,
Yet all they’ve built is rot and rust.
Your savings burn, your future fades,
But take your meds—don’t be afraid!

For trust is blind, and pride runs deep,
Admitting fault cuts far too steep.
So wag your finger, curse the past,
And pray the next fool’s not as fast.
